Election
General Local Elections are held every three years.
The next General Local Election will be held on November 15, 2008. Qualified electors in the City of Coquitlam will vote to elect a Mayor, 8 Councillors and 4 School Trustees.

The Coquitlam Election Office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and is located on the second floor, Coquitlam city hall, 3000 Guildford Way, Coquitlam. You may call 604-927-3025 if you have any questions or require information.
Notice of candidates
Pursuant to section 74 of the Local Government Act the persons listed on the city's web site (www.coquitlam.ca) have declared their candidacy for elected office in the city of Coquitlam as of 4 p.m. Friday, October 10, 2008.

The following voting places will be open November 15, 2008 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
As the City of Coquitlam has only one voting Division, electors may vote at any one of the voting places.

If you are unable to get to a polling station or require language translation, there are procedures in place to allow for assistance.
Election signage
The posting of election signs on public property in Coquitlam is restricted to six (6) locations and the size of all signs whether on public or private property must not exceed 0.61 metres by 0.61 meters (2 ft by 2 ft).
Working for the election
The city of Coquitlam will require staff for the polling stations on November 15, 2008.
Registering to vote
On general voting day the city of Coquitlam will use the most recent provincial voters list from Elections BC. If you are not on the list, you may register to vote on election day by bringing two pieces of identification and completing the voter registration form.
Who can vote?
To qualify to vote, you must meet age and residency requirements.
Special voting opportunities
Special voting opportunities will be provided, on a limited basis, for persons who are hospitalized or in care facilities and thus unable to attend a voting place.

The last general local government election took place on Saturday, November 19, 2005.
Advance voting
You may vote at an advance voting opportunity if you are unable to vote on general voting day because:
- You expect to be absent from the city of Coquitlam
- You will be unable to vote on general voting day for reasons of conscience
- You will not be able to attend a voting place on general voting day for reasons beyond your control
- You have a physical disability or are a person whose mobility is impaired. You are a candidate or candidate representative
- You are an election official
All electors are now eligible to vote at an advance voting opportunity and a declaration of eligibility will no longer be required.
